RAINFALL CLIMATOLOGY OF TURKEY

by D. Altinbilek, Y. Kutoglu and Z. Akyurek

Turkey is located between 36° and 42°N latitudes and 25° and 45° E longitudes with a surface area of 780.000 kmq. The whole country lies in the subtropical zone with semiarid regions, and it is divided into seven geographical regions.

Due to the variation in topography, four main types of climate are observed in the country, namely Mediterranean, Black Sea, Interior region, East high region. Air flow coming to Turkey is controlled by Asor Anticyclone, Siberian Anticyclone, Polar Front Depressions, Mediterranean Depressions, Basra Low Pressure Center.

Three types of rainfall occur over Turkey, these are:

The annual mean rainfall over Turkey is estimated as 643 mm from the rainfall records from 1616 precipitation stations, of which one third are equipped with rainfall recorders. Besides rainfall, the depth of the snow pack is also measured at some of these stations. The annual mean rainfall decreases from sea coasts to the central plateau. The minimum value of annual rainfall was observed at Kayseri in Central Anatolia as 63 mm and the maximum value of 4043 mm at Rize in Eastern Black Sea coast.
