AVI 080 Project "ACROSS"

"Analyzed Climatology of Rainfall Obtained from Satellite and Surface data

for the Mediterranean Basin"

Project Objectives

The project aims at producing a unified satellite and raingauge climatology of rainfall over the Eastern Mediterranean Region, in order to permit a much more satisfactory evaluation and interpretation than has been possible hitherto of over-land and over-water anomalies. Selected additional analyses will be undertaken to sustain related studies of surface effects of rainfall extremes, and aid environmental forecasting, especially rainfall anomaly response.

The study area initially considered in the project includes the Eastern Mediterranean sea and land areas and, in particular, the territories of Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus, Crete, Italy, Greece and the sea areas from the Sicily Channel to the Black Sea.

The climatology of rainfall will be analysed using ground based data and remotly sensed estimates. Calibration data are derived from the coastal areas over the study region where there is already in existence an established ground based network system of raingauges that can provide rainfall information over land areas with a fine monitoring resolution. A unified and comprehensive database of all such available hydrological data will be set up. As well, the available satellite observations (passive microvawe imagery) over the study area will be acquired and analysed for over-water rainfall retrieval.
