"Analyzed Climatology of Rainfall Obtained from Satellite and Surface data

for the Mediterranean Basin"

Short summary extracted from Research Report

1st YEAR PROGRESS REPORT

by D. Altinbilek

The tasks of METU within the first two semesters were concentrated on raingauge data collection and the development of graphical tools for data analysis and presentation.

Monthly raingauge data from Turkish territory were collected from

Information about the meteorological stations operated by the different organizations in Turkey is given in Table 1.

Initially some 98 stations’ rainfall data were collected for the period 1978 - 1994. For comparison with satellite data it was later decided to increase the density of the raingauge stations so as to obtain a 25 km x 25 km grid coverage in the coastal areas and coarser grid in the interland. As the result of the activities in first semester a report was prepared on rainfall climatology. This report also includes graphical representations of seasonal variations of rainfall in Turkey as well as maps of distribution of mean annual rainfall, the annual precipitation in 1994, climatic regions of Turkey, and distribution of max. depth of snow cover.

As agreed in the Start - up Meeting in Savona, daily rainfall data were collected from 32 stations in the Mediterranean coast of Turkey between 1978 and 1994. In addition 66 stations' data from other parts of Turkey were collected from NCDC, for which the missing 92 - 93 period was obtained by METU from DMI records. Hourly storm data for 4 - 5 Nov. 1995 was collected for a case - study in Antalya.

The development of graphical tools for data analysis and presentation was performed through:
